Why did Oman not join the UAE?
Oman became a major power in the region in the 17th century as it formed a Maritime empire conquering distant lands including what is now the United Arab Emirates (the UAE). The Omani Empire maintained control over the UAE by having the local Bedouin tribes swear loyalty to the Sultan in Mus, Oman's capital.
